European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
