Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from captain Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "weak men".

Stokes made those words in multiple conversations in the wake of England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

But, following the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, Stokes said his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left England six down for 207 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435.

This means, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three matches played.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – after England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate future in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in the team's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
