Around 50 automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Vehicles, walls and mailboxes were defaced, in some cases with swastikas, they stated in a release.
Officers say they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a resident noticed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored fluid.
The liquid had been applied in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Law enforcement then discovered numerous other marked cars and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under laws outlawing the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Police state initial examinations indicate the liquid was most likely blood from a person.
"There is still no indication as to where it came from; authorities are presently not aware of any harm in relation with the incident," they stated.
City officials said they were working "to resolve the mystery" and have asked to the community for details.
An important representative said the attack made him stunned and required to be resolved promptly.
"This event affects the core of Hanau and revives the trauma of the extremist terrorist attack half a decade ago," he stated on online, mentioning the killing of nine victims by a assailant focusing on residents of foreign heritage in five years prior.
